The elephant lowered her trunk and placed the food into the hole. Rahul felt his chest tighten. She was not eating it. She was trying to give it to whatever was trapped below. The elephant stood there, quieter now, as if waiting. Rahul carefully moved forward, and a few villagers followed. They reached the edge of the hole and looked down.
At first, all they could see was thick, dark mud. Then something moved. Rahul leaned closer and finally understood. A baby elephant calf was stuck inside, half-submerged and weak, with only part of its trunk above the surface. Each small movement made it sink deeper. A gasp spread through the group. The mother had not been digging randomly. She had been trying to save her calf. But every time she struck the ground, the loose mud collapsed back into the hole. Rahul quickly realized they could not pull from the top. If they wanted to help, they would have to work carefully from the sides.
