The Rescue Had To Be Done Carefully
Rahul told the villagers they needed something strong to pull with, but they also needed control. One man ran back and returned with a thick rope. The group moved slowly and stayed low, avoiding sudden movements that might frighten the mother. She watched from close by, tense but still. She did not charge. It was almost as if she understood they were trying to help.

They slid the rope down into the mud and worked it carefully beneath the calf’s body, avoiding the neck and legs. The mud resisted, and for a moment it looked like the calf might sink farther. Rahul told everyone to stop, adjust, and pull slowly. The rope tightened, the villagers pulled together, and the mud finally began to loosen. Then the mother stepped forward. She wrapped her trunk around the calf and pulled at the same time. With one final shift, the mud gave way, and the calf came free, collapsing onto solid ground while still breathing. Nobody spoke. The mother lowered her head and touched her calf gently. Rahul stepped back, knowing the moment belonged to them.
