The Villagers Tried To Calm Her Down
For a moment, nobody spoke. Everyone understood that if the elephant kept going like this, she might exhaust herself before anyone could help. They needed her to move away from the hole, but not by frightening her. One villager suggested bringing food, not to trap her or chase her off, but to calm her long enough for them to see what was happening.

They gathered what they could, including bananas and sugarcane, then placed it carefully nearby before stepping back. At first, nothing changed. The elephant kept digging, slower now but still completely focused. Then her trunk lifted. She paused and turned slightly as the scent reached her. The group held its breath as she stepped toward the food. For a second, it seemed as if the plan had worked. She picked up the food, but then did something no one expected. She turned back toward the hole.
