The Elephant Would Not Let Anyone Near
The group slowed down when they reached the trees. Nobody rushed forward. They could see the elephant now, still standing over the same place. The hole beneath her had grown wider and deeper, and the soil around it looked unstable. The villagers watched in silence as she continued striking the ground.
One younger man took a step forward and said they should get closer. Before anyone could stop him, he moved ahead. The elephant reacted instantly. Her head snapped up, her ears spread wide, and a sharp trumpet ripped through the air. The young man stumbled back, and nobody else tried to approach after that. Rahul watched carefully. The elephant seemed tired, but her movements were still urgent. Then one older villager said he had heard the same sound the night before. Rahul looked back at the hole and suddenly felt a chill. “She is trying to reach something,” he said.
