USD Coin: The Stablecoin for Serious Institutions

USD Coin (USDC) is a dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Circle, fully backed by cash and short-term U.S. Treasury holdings at regulated banks. Unlike Tether, Circle publishes monthly reserve audits, making USDC the stablecoin of choice for institutions that care about compliance and transparency. At $79 billion market cap, it’s the preferred tool for on-chain treasury operations and institutional DeFi.

The Institutional Play

USDC has genuine regulatory oversight, monthly third-party attestations, and strong positioning under the 2025 U.S. stablecoin law. The tradeoff: no price appreciation potential (it’s always $1), and it has to compete with Tether for market share. But for corporate treasuries and regulated funds, USDC is as close to on-chain cash as it gets.
