Anne Frank House
This is definitely a place to add you must-do list! The Anne Frank House maintains the secret wing where the young Anne Frank hid from Nazi persecution from 1942 until she was captured along with her family in 1944. This is also where she scribed her diary that is so world-famous today. The rooms of the house are on an enclosed courtyard behind a 17th-century canal house that served as the Dutch HQs of the spice company that Anne’s father Otto worked for. Otto was the Frank family’s sole survivor after the Holocaust and published his daughter’s diary in 1947. In the house, you will find the original copy of this her incredible work, along with photographs and items belonging to the Frank family.
Vondelpark
This is one of Amsterdam’s favourite parks! It’s not only peaceful and tranquil but has beautiful lawns, strips of ponds and majestic trees. Did you know that the Openluchttheater put on a lively, dynamic schedule of free live music, musical theatre and cabaret between the months of June to August? Despite the fact that the actual performances cost nothing to watch, its probably a good idea to reserve a place. If you think that’s all the park has to offer, there’s more…there is a stunning rose garden in the centre of the Vondelpark that was planted in 1936 and grows more than 70 types of roses.
Bloemenmarkt
On the Singel canal that lies between Koningsplein and the Muntplein is the home to the world’s only floating flower market. Ever since 1862 traders have been selling cut flowers and bulbs here from houseboats. It’s not only a magnificent sight to witness but here you can buy some of the most exquisite flowers. The Bloemenmarkt takes place all year round, and is currently the market is one of the main suppliers of tulip bulbs to tulip apparatus and everything in between to tourists visiting Amsterdam. While tulips season usually falls between the middle of April and the beginning of May, so this is a great time to hop on a train to see this marvellous spring display.
